Ashoka Halwa is a very popular sweet dish that has its origins in Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu. This Halwa is also known as "Thiruvaiyar Halwa" and makes for Diwali festival.

Ingredients :
  • 1 cup yellow split moong dal
  • 2 tbsp wheat flour
  • 1 cup sugar or sugar as required
  • 4 tbsp ghee
  • 2 tbsp soaked saffron water or a pinch of food colour
  • 1/4 tsp green cardamom powder
  • some cashew nuts, chopped
  • some Almonds, chopped
Method :

Dry roast moong dal till you get a nice aroma. Add 1+1/2 cups water and pressure cook for 10 minutes. Allow it cool, mix with a spoon and keep aside.
Heat half of the ghee in a heavy bottomed pan. Add wheat flour and stir well for two minutes on the lower flame. Now add cooked moong dal paste to it and stir continuously to avoid any lumps. Add sugar and mix well. Stir for 5-6 minutes on medium flame. Add saffron or food colour. Mix well. Add the remaining ghee and stir till it leaves the sides of the pan. Add cardamom powder, cashew nuts and Almonds. Turn off the flame. Transfer to a serving plate and garnish with some nuts. Serve it hot or chill.
