Punjabi rajma-chawal (Red kedney beans) recipe





Ingredients :
  • 1 cup red Rajma or red kidney beans, soaked overnight
  • 1 cup tomato paste 
  • 1/2 cup onion paste
  • 1 tbsp onion garlic paste 
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 small cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star-anise
  • 2 green cardamom
  • 2 cloves 
  • 1 tsp jaggery 
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder 
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper powder
  • 1 tsp Punjabi garam masala powder
  • salt to taste 
  • 2-3 tbsp oil 
Method :

Soak the rajma in water overnight or for 8-9 hours. Take a cooker and add in the soaked rajma, a glass of water and 1/2 tsp salt. And boil until 2 whistles and turn off the flame.

Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, cloves, green cardamom, star anise, crackle them. Add onion and saute for 2 minutes. Add garlic-ginger paste, saute for a few more seconds. Add onion paste and saute for 2-3 minutes. Now add all spices powder, salt and jaggery. Saute for 1 minute. Add tomato paste and cook for 5 minutes on medium flame.

Add boiled rajma along with the rajma boiling water into the cooked masala and mix well. Cook for 5-7 minutes. Turn off the flame. Serve it with rice.
