Chana dal (split chick peas) stuffed Modak recipe

Ingredients :
For the Modak dough,

  • 1 cup rice flour 
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1/4 tsp salt 
For the filling,
  • 1/2 cup chana dal (split chickpea)
  • 1 cup jaggery, grated or powder 
  • 2 tbsp raisins 
  • a pinch of salt 
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • a pinch of nutmeg grated or powder 
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder 
  • 1 tsp dry mango powder (amchur powder)

Method :
For the filling,

Soak the chana dal for at least 2-3 hours.Pressure cook the soaked dal with 1 cup water and cook up to 2-3 whistles. Once done, transfer the cooked dal to a colander and drain all water. In a plate or bowl add , the boiled chana dal, grated jaggery, fennel seeds, a pinch of salt, a pinch of nutmeg, raisins, dry mango powder and red chilli powder. Mix well and keep this aside.

For the Modak cover,

Bring the water to a boil and add salt and ghee. Now slowly add in the rice flour and stirring constantly so that no lumps form. Now cover and keep aside for 10 minutes. Now blend or knead the dough thoroughly.

Now putting it together,

Take a small ball of dough and flatten it and place a spoon of the chana dal mixture in the center and fold the edges together and seal. Repeat with the remaining dough. Now place them greased steamer pan and steamed for 10-12 minutes. Serve it chill.
