Aloo (potato) kofta in coconut gravy recipe

Aloo kofta in coconut gravy 

Ingredients :
For kofta, 
  • 4 medium potatoes, boiled, peeled and mashed
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp cornflour 
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 14 tsp turmeric powder 
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder 
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper powder 
  • Oil or ghee for deep frying
For gravy paste, 
  • 1 big onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 1 small piece ginger
  • 1/2 cup dried coconut or fresh coconut, grated (I used dried  coconut)
  • 2 tbsp peanuts 
  • 2 tbsp tamarind pulp 
For gravy,
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 cloves 
  • 1 green cardamom 
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • few curry leaves 
  • a bay leaf
  •  2 tbsp oil 
  • 1/2 tbsp red chilli powder 
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder 
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 
  • 1/4 black pepper powder 
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • salt to taste 
  • 1 tbsp raisins 
  • few grated coconut and raisins for garnishing 

Method :

For kofta

In a big bowl or plate, add mashed potato, chopped onion, red chilli powder, black pepper, turmeric powder, salt, cornflour and mix them and make a dough. Now, make lemon size balls and keep on a dry plate. Heat oil or ghee in a deep fry pan and drop the potato kofta balls in the oil or ghee. When the potato balls are golden brown in colour, remove them from the oil and keep  aside.

For gravy

In a blender, add onion, garlic, ginger, peanuts, grated coconut and tamarind, make a paste and keep aside. Now, heat 2 tbsp oil in a pan, add cumin, cloves,cardamom, cinnamon, bay leaf, curry leaves and crackle them. Add chopped onion and saute for 1 minute. Now, add gravy paste, all masala powder, salt and saute for 2-3 minutes on the medium flame. Now add raisins and a bowl of water, mix well. Bring it to a boil and add fried potato kofta balls and just turn off the flame and cover with a lid for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, garnish with few raisins and grated coconut. Serve it with jeera rice, pulao.
