Dal Dhokli recipe

Dal Dhokli 


Dal dhokli is a Gujrati dish.

Ingredients :

For Dhokli,
  • 1 cup wheat flour (gehun ka atta)
  • 1 tbsp gram flour (Besan)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp oil
For dal,
  • 1 cup tuvar dal (Arhar dal)
  • 4 cups water 
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp garam masala powder 
  • salt to taste 
  • 2 green chillies, cut into lengthwise 
  • 4 tbsp tamarind pulp or 3-4 kokum soaked 
  • 1 tbsp jaggery (gud)
For tempering,
  • 1 tbsp deshi ghee 
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 pinch of Asafoetida (Hing)
  • few curry leaves 
  • 2 dried red chillies 
  • fresh coriander chopped for garnishing 
Method :

In a big bowl, add wheat flour, gram flour, salt, oil and mix well. Using enough water, make a smooth dough. Now divide the dough into 5-6 equal portions and roll out each portion as a round roti, using a little wheat flour for rolling. Now cut each roti into square or diamond shapes and keep aside.

Clean, wash and drain the tuvar dal. Combine the dal, salt, turmeric powder and 4 cups of water in a presser cooker and cook for 5-7 minutes or 3 whistles. Now allow the steam to escape before opening the lid. If you want, add more cups of hot water and place the cooker on the flame. Now, add dhokli and cook on the medium flame. After 5 minutes, add green chilli, red chilli powder, garam masala, jaggery and tamarind or kokum cook for 15 minutes on the medium flame. Turn off the flame.

Now for tempering, heat ghee in a pan, add mustard, cumin seeds. When the seeds crackle, add red chilli, asafoetida (hing), curry leaves and saute for few seconds. Now, add it to the dal dhokli and cover for 10 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve it hot.
