Chawal aur urad dal (Rice and split black gram) khichdi recipe

This khichdi is famous for Makkarsankranti in Bihar. New grains grow in the farm of the farmers. This khichdi cooked once in a year in occasion of Makkarsankranti. This khichdi is cooked with new rice and new dal with crushed ginger. Its a very tasty adarak wali khichdi. Makkarsankranti coming into winter, so hot-hot khichdi with ghee eaten feels better. I hope so all Indian cook khichdi, pongal and Lohri for Makkarsankanti. This khichdi is very digestible.

Ingredients :
  • 1 cup rice (New rice is best for the khichdi)
  • 1/2 cup split black gram(dhuli hui Urad dal) 
  • 2 tbsp whole black gram (chhilka wali urad dal)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 
  • salt to taste 
  • 1/2 cup green peas
  • 1/2 cup chopped cauliflower 
  • 1 chopped tomato 
  • 1 tbsp crushed ginger(kuchla hua adrak) 
  • 5 cup water 
For tempering:
  • 1 tbsp deshi ghee 
  • 2 red chilies dry 
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 pinch asafoetida (Hing) 
Method :
Wash Rice and dal. In a pressure cooker, add chawal, dal, cauliflower, green peas, tomato, turmeric powder, salt, and cover with lid and cook it until 2 whistle and turn off the flame. Now allow the steam to escape before opening the lid and add crushed ginger and mix well. Now tempering, heat ghee, add cumin seeds, asafoetida (hing), bay leaves, dried red chilies, when the seeds crackle and add in the cooked khichdi and just cover with lid for 5 minutes. Now serve hot khichdi with desi ghee. There is a famous saying, khichdi ke hain chaar yaar Ghee, Dahi, papad aur aachar.

Serve hot with Deshi ghee
