Chana dal (split gram dal) fry recipe

Ingredients :

  • 1 cup chana dal(split gram dal)
  • 1/2 cup tomato puree
  • 1 tsp garlic-ginger paste 
  • 2 tbsp onion paste
  • 2 chopped green chilly
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp tamarind pulp
  • 1 tbsp sugar or jaggery 
  • 1/2 tsp red chilly powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 cloves (Luong)
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 2 green cardamom 
  • 1-star anise
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter
  • salt to taste
  • garnish for lemon slice 
Method :

Soak the chana dal for 4-5 hours, then wash and drain all water. Now in a pressure cooker, add soaked chana dal, 1 bowl water, salt, turmeric powder, cloves, star anise, cinnamon, cardamom and cover it with lid and cook it 1 whistle and remove from the gas and keep aside. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid. Now heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, curry leaves it crackle, add chopped onion, green chilly and saute till. Now add garlic-ginger paste, onion paste, red chilly powder, salt and saute for 2 minutes and add tomato puree, sugar or jaggery and tamarind pulp it stir for 2-3 minutes. Now add cooked chana dal and 1 bowl water and cooked for 5 minutes and remove from the gas and garnish with lemon slice. Serve with Rice and Rotis.
