Sambar recipe

Ingredients :

For the Sambar ,

  • 1/2 cup toover dal
  • 1/2 cup pink lentils ( masoor dal)
  • 2 chopped tomatoes 
  • 2 chopped onions
  • 1 chopped potato
  • 4 pieces brinjal 
  • 4 pieces pumpkin 
  • 6 pieces drumsticks
  • 2 tbsp tamarind pulp
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp kashmiri red chilly powder
  • 2 tbsp Sambhar masala
For the Tempering ,
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 cumin seeds(jeera)
  • 2 red dry chilly
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds(methi daana)
  • 2 pinch Asafoetida ( Hing)
  • 1 tbsp urad dal
  • 4 tbsp oil
Method :
Wash the dal and boil with tomatoes,onion and salt with 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker for 10 minutes. Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, mustard seeds,  fenugreek, seeds red chilly,curry leaves, asafoetida, urad dal and saute. Add pieces of vegetables in the same pan and cook it for 20-25 minutes. Mix the cooked dal with the remaining water in it. Add sambar masala, red chilly powder and tamarind pulp. Cook further for about 10-12 minutes on a low or medium flame. The sambar is now ready. Serve with Idli, vada, rice and Dosa.

Serve with Idli
